What is a socket weld flange?
Socket-weld pipe flanges are usually used on smaller diameter high-pressure pipes. The pipe is put into the socket end of the pipe flange, and fillet weld is put around the top. This makes the inside of the pipe smoother and helps the fluid or gas flow better.

How to Use

Insert the pipe end into the socket weld flange until the bottom of the pipe touches the shoulder area. Pull the pipe back 1.6mm (1/16″) and then do filet welding. The point is to make a space for expansion (1 filet weld) between the flange and the pipes or fittings.

How is Socket Welding Flange Generated

The socket welding flange was first used for stainless steel superheaters to avoid cracking caused by thermal stresses during heating processes. After years of development, it became a standard application for all types of materials.

Socket Welded Flange Face Types

Socket-welded flanges, like other kinds of welding flanges, come in RF type and RTJ type (slip on, weld neck, or blind flange).

Advantages:

-A socket weld flange could be used instead of a threaded flange to reduce the chance of a leak.
-No need to round off the edges before welding.
-Welding work outside of the pipe, will not penetrate the pipe bore
-It is recommended for applications where internal welding operations are hard. This sock welded construction eliminates internal pockets while avoiding the warpage of welding heat and damage to the flange face caused by the weld spatter. It has the same internal pressure as the sliding on the flange and has a better fatigue life.

Disadvantages:

– Welders need to be more skilled to make a socket-welded flange, and when they do, they need to make sure that the expanding gap between the pipe and shoulder is 1/16 inch.
-The expansion gap increases the chances of cracks, especially in pipes that don’t corrode, like stainless steel pipes, so cracks between the pipe and the flange will cause corrosion problems. So SW flange won’t work in corrosive or radioactive environments because this solid buildup at the joint can cause problems with operation and maintenance. So, people use welding more often because the welding goes all the way through the pipe from the outside to the inside. This makes the connections stronger and more resistant to corrosion.
